Double-click test: find a mouse that clicks twice

This double-click test detects mouse chatter. When a single physical press registers as two clicks because the switch is worn out. It's one of the most common ways a mouse fails, and it makes dragging, selecting and gaming frustrating.

How the double-click test works

The test measures the time between consecutive presses of the same button. A deliberate double-click is spaced a couple of hundred milliseconds apart, but a chattering switch fires the second contact within a few milliseconds, far faster than any human can click twice. Any gap shorter than the threshold is counted as chatter and highlighted, and the shortest gap it has seen is shown so you can gauge how bad the problem is.

What causes double-clicking?

Inside the mouse, each button is a tiny mechanical switch. Over millions of clicks the metal contacts wear, oxidise or bounce, so one press briefly makes and breaks contact twice. The firmware's de-bounce filter usually hides this, but once the bounce outlasts the filter the extra click leaks through. Dust and humidity make it worse. It typically appears gradually, then becomes constant.

How to fix a double-clicking mouse

If the mouse is under warranty, a chatter result here is good evidence for a replacement. Otherwise you can sometimes clean the switch with contact cleaner, increase the de-bounce time in the mouse's software if it offers that, or replace the switch if you're comfortable soldering. Run this test again afterwards to confirm the fix.
